Dear Freedom Schools parents/caregivers and beloved scholars:
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we took the past two days to look deeply into the concerns that had been raised by some Freedom Schools employees.
I’m writing to share some disappointing news: Effective today, the Summer 2020 Freedom Schools program has been canceled.I imagine this announcement is disheartening to you and your scholar, so I want to share what led me to this decision:
- First and foremost, we are committed to offering a rigorous, high-quality Freedom Schools experience in an environment that meets our high expectations in both curriculum/program content and operations (including health and safety).
- As we looked into how the program was being implemented, we found that we were not doing a sufficient job delivering on our commitments. While many things were going well and according to our expectations, there was insufficient consistency in implementation across all three sites. Certain issues that were raised during the first week were remedied for the second week but overall, I assessed that we will not be able to quickly resolve other issues that are essential to a high-quality program.
- We cannot, in good conscience, continue a Freedom Schools program that is not up to our standards of excellence in both program content and operations. Your scholar is at the center of all we do; your scholar is at the center of this decision specific to the Freedom Schools program, too.
- Therefore, and regrettably, the remainder of the 2020 Freedom School program has been canceled.
We will continue to support your scholar’s literacy skill development
While the Freedom Schools program has concluded for summer, we will continue to support your scholar’s literacy skill development. We are developing a schedule to distribute books to registered Freedom Schools scholars through August 13, the original end date for the program. Dr. Rev Hillstrom, director of educational equity, will send you the book distribution schedule by the end of day on Wednesday, July 22.
Our free summer meals program is also available
While this service may not be of interest to every family, I want you to be aware that our summer meals program is also available. Free meals for all children ages 0-18 are available through August 21 at all three Freedom Schools sites: Crest View, Garden City and North View.
Meals are available Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meals include a cold lunch that also includes cold breakfast for the following morning. On Fridays, you will receive meals for Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday.
If you cannot pick up meal(s) from one of our designated sites, please call 763-391-7244 (alternate delivery options may be available through August 17).
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we took the necessary time to learn more about the concerns that had been raised by some staff. I am truly sorry that we are unable to continue serving your scholar through Freedom Schools this summer.
