Tidbits

Hello Families-
We have been discussing the roles of student council members. We have about 10 students who have showed interested in representing our classroom. Ask your child if they are one of them. If so, and if they are elected, they will need to attend monthly meetings at 8:30 AM so transportation to school on those mornings is a requirement. Also, they should be comfortable speaking in front of their peers and on WDTV.

Party and planner money requests have been sent home. I have encouraged the class to have all their money returned to me by this Friday. Also, Subway money is due by September 30th for the DARE lunch. If you have questions, please contact me.

Homework: We began switching for both reading and math this week. Homework assignments vary from teacher to teacher, so please be sure to check your child’s planner each evening. Thank you for your help.

As always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me!

Science

We have begun our first science unit called “Environments”. Ask your child to describe their terrarium for you…they were extremely creative and thoughtful when creating their maps of the terrariums. We will check them daily and chart the growth. Have your child also share with you all the different kinds of plants we planted!!

Very excited about their terrarium....

Homework Policy Change

Posted in My Posts | No Comments »

Hi Families-
Wow…what a great weekend I had. I spent it scrap booking in Hutchinson with some good friends! Now, my family and I are off to our kickball game tonight!

The homework policy will be changing. Friday morning was incredibly busy for me trying to get homework for the entire week accounted for as students brought most of it back to school on Friday. I just will not have the time before lunch (as it will need to be checked before lunch so that kids can attend Power Study Hall, if need be) to correct it, enter grades, and send students to Power Study Hall. So, back to the standard procedure. I will assign homework and it will be due the following day, unless I tell the students otherwise. Please refer to your child’s planner to see what homework is due when!

Thank you for being flexible with me as together we learn the process that is best for all!

Also, we have DARE tomorrow. If your child has not returned their permission slip signed by both you and your child, please send it with them tomorrow!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

End of the Week Notes

Posted in My Posts | No Comments »

As we close the second week of school, have your child reflect upon their homework priorities. As you know, homework for the week is due by Friday. However, your child is invited to complete homework each evening and return it the following day. I understand how busy families are each evening so please encourage your child to prioritize their weekly homework assignments. If homework is not returned Friday, they will be required to attend Power Study Hall Friday or Monday.

The all school BBQ is Friday, September 18th. The fifth graders will be eating lunch at 12:35. You can meet your child by the cafeteria doors. Hope to see you there!

Beginning on Monday, your child will be switching classes for both reading and math, depending on their instructional level. They will learn who their math and reading teacher is Monday morning.

Our paintings of our self-portraits are almost complete! We will be adding our final details tomorrow morning. Miss Rohling and I are hoping to have them displayed above our lockers for the BBQ! Come and check them out…very artistic group!!

Friday, September 18th will be Miss Rohling’s last day with our class. She will be heading back to the University of Morris for the remainder of the year. In January, she will return to Woodland student teaching in a primary classroom. She did a wonderful job building relationships with your children and led a math lesson, a reading lesson, and a morning meeting! We had fun getting to know her while she was with us! We wish her the best!!

Enjoy your weekend!! I will be spending mine down in Hutchinson scrapbooking with some friends and my sister in law!

DARE and Homework

Posted in My Posts | No Comments »

We had our  first DARE lesson this afternoon and the kids seemed very excited and interested! Our DARE officer taught us the meaning of the program and a gave us some background information as to what we will be learning about through November. Ask your child to share what DARE is with you. Also, please sign the DARE letter and send that back to school with your child!

Homework has officially begun. Do not hesitate to call if you have questions. Here is a little bit of information on homework:
ALL homework is due on Friday (I am trying this out for the first time…I know how busy we all are in the evenings, so I talked with the class today about prioritizing. If they are busy on a certain night of the week, they can complete the assignment the next night and then turn it in. If homework is not getting turned in by Friday, we will go back to “next day” due date! I will see how this goes…stay tuned!) If I require an assignment to be turned in before Friday, I will be clear about that with the students. The homework schedule will vary, so please refer to your child’s planner if you have questions. Anything in your child’s planner that is circled means it must be returned.

Hello families-
Here are are few things to help us get going this fall. Please let me know if you have any questions.
1. Water Bottles: Students are allowed to have water bottles at school. They will be able to fill them up twice daily. Water only please in a “sport top” bottle. Students can bring them home each evening or they can be stored in the room until Friday, and at that time they must go home to be cleaned!
2. Please send with your child a family photo to place on our Hopes and Dreams bulletin board. They will be returned at the end of the year.
3. Fast Math and Type to Learn will begin next week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:30.
4. Team time and leveled reading will begin on Monday, September 14th.
5. Please send me an e-mail so that I can begin a distribution list for the parents in our class.
6. Spelling will begin next week. I will pre-test on Monday and if your child receives 100% they will be given the challenge list. Tests will be given on Fridays.
