No More W.O.W.

We will not be continuing with our WOW program.  As we reflected on the program, we felt that it was not making an impact on students as we had hoped.  Students will now be sent to Power Study Hall during recess each day if they do not have their work ready for the day.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Looking Ahead…

Greetings Families-
This last week before Spring Break is going to be business as usual. Here are some happenings in Room 53…

Monday: Butter Braid fundraising pick up after school

Wednesday: Unit 8 review for math test

Thursday: Unit 8 math test and science circulatory test

Friday: Unit 8 math test packets come home (as always, please sign your child’s test packet and have them return it Monday after break!)

Friday will be Ms. Rohling’s last day with us. She will be finishing up her last few sessions of class back at Morris. She did a wonderful job while student teaching with us and she will surely be missed. It would be a nice gesture if your children could write her a short goodbye letter. We will celebrate Ms. Rohling on Friday at her “going away” party!

Report Cards

Posted in My Posts | No Comments »

Hello Parents,
All report cards will be sent home tomorrow, March 17th, with your child. Expect to see them. We are asking that you send back the white envelope with your signatures on it. The white envelope is the only piece that needs to come back.
Just a note about the report cards; you will find that the math and reading performance sections on the report cards are not filled out. We do not fill in that information at this point so do not expect to see any information in these sections.
As usual, don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
Mrs. Gute and Ms. Rohling

Spelling

Posted in My Posts | No Comments »

This coming week we will have our pretest for spelling on Monday instead of typically having it before the weekend. The post test will still be on Thursday. The only change is that there will be no study time over the weekend. So next week’s spelling will work like this: Pretest on Monday, March 15th, and post test on Thursday, March 18th. As always, don’t be afraid to ask if there are questions.

MATH:
Today, we will pretest unit 8 in math so that we can arrange new math groups. In addition, the Unit 7 math test will be given this Wednesday in most math classes. Thursday will be the ONLY day for retakes as report card marking is on Friday!

LEVELED READING:
We are finishing up with our novel of Stuart Little. Students will be testing on that Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be a recess option to watch the video on Tuesday and during class on Wednesday. If you give your child permission, please have them bring the permission slip back to school with your signature.

HEALTH:
Mrs. Hokanson will have our last life skills lesson on Wednesday. In addition, we will be testing on the skills that she has taught us.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
We will end our unit of Discovery this week. On Wednesday, each colony will determine their final wealth so that we can determine the “winner!” It has been one long and exciting journey. The Discovery test will be on Thursday, so please go over your child’s study guide with them. Also, the winning colony will be invited to join Ms. Rohling and I in a Subway lunch! More information to come on that…

I think that is it for now! Stay tuned….

Trade Fair Letter

Posted in My Posts | No Comments »

February 25, 2010

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),

Your child has been studying about exploration and colonization. They have been taking part in a simulation called “Discovery.” It is designed to give the students an experience similar to the earliest colonists and the Native peoples of America.

One of the things that brought the Europeans and Native Americans together was trade. Money was not used; wares or goods were traded. To give your child a better understanding of trading and bartering, we are going to have a Trade Fair.

The Trade Fair is going to take place on Thursday, March 11. On that day, your child should bring as much or as little as they like, but they must bring something. These “wares” should be made from items found around your home or neighborhood. Your child should take responsibility for creating and cleaning up any mess.

The following is a list of wares to get students thinking about the endless possibilities. Students may not bring homemade baked goods though.

Friendship bracelets, stationary, fortunes, clay beads, hair accessories, note pads, pencil toppers, yarn pom poms, pressed flowers, book marks, special rocks, shells, artwork, origami, ornaments, sewing projects, beadie buddies, wood work.

We feel that as a result of the Trade Fair students will:

¨ Develop an awareness and appreciation for bartering

¨ Create and trade wares

¨ Experience the law of supply and demand

¨ Experience beginning economics

Thank you for your continued support,

The Fifth Grade Teachers

Trade Fair

Hello families-
We are finishing up our social studies unit on Discovery of the New World. Your children have been hard at work developing their colonies with their fellow colonists. It has been truly amazing watching the interactions, trading, battling, sailing, and developing their colonies as a group! The queens have been very impressed! As part of this simulation, your children have learned how to make trades in the New World with the Native Americans. To continue this experience and bring it to life, all of fifth grade will be having a trade fair on Thursday, March 11th. A letter was sent home describing the activity, but be sure to check with your child. Participation in this activity will be part of your child social studies grade for this trimester. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Happy Trading-
Mrs. Gute and Ms. Rohling
