Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),
Your child has been studying about exploration and colonization. They have been taking part in a simulation called “Discovery.” It is designed to give the students an experience similar to the earliest colonists and the Native peoples of America.
One of the things that brought the Europeans and Native Americans together was trade. Money was not used; wares or goods were traded. To give your child a better understanding of trading and bartering, we are going to have a Trade Fair.
The Trade Fair is going to take place on Thursday, March 11. On that day, your child should bring as much or as little as they like, but they must bring something. These “wares” should be made from items found around your home or neighborhood. Your child should take responsibility for creating and cleaning up any mess.
The following is a list of wares to get students thinking about the endless possibilities. Students may not bring homemade baked goods though.
Friendship bracelets, stationary, fortunes, clay beads, hair accessories, note pads, pencil toppers, yarn pom poms, pressed flowers, book marks, special rocks, shells, artwork, origami, ornaments, sewing projects, beadie buddies, wood work.
We feel that as a result of the Trade Fair students will:
¨ Develop an awareness and appreciation for bartering
¨ Create and trade wares
¨ Experience the law of supply and demand
¨ Experience beginning economics
Thank you for your continued support,
The Fifth Grade Teachers
