This year, 123 Osseo Area Schools students received state bilingual and multilingual seals or achievement awards. All three comprehensive high schools offered the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages assessment to test students' proficiency in other languages. Depending on how the students scored on the assessment, students earned two, three or four semester credits at Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, which helps them save on tuition costs. Students had the opportunity to take the assessment to measure their proficiency in Hmong, French, Spanish and Mandarin.
In our increasingly connected and globalized economy, speaking more than one language is a tremendous asset. In addition to the assessment, students completed all their required English language arts courses. The state bilingual and multilingual awards were established in Minnesota in 2014 to recognize students for their language skills. This is the second year Osseo Area Schools participated in the program.
